The Lowdown

When:
Where: Australia Wide
Costs: Currently it is free for any volunteer that can volunteer for 4 weeks or more.

What’s involved?

Volunteers will work with all kinds of clients from kids, families and women to unaccompanied minors and men. Activities include arts & craft, sport, movie nights, English classes, cooking and many more. If you have a particular skill that might be fun and developmental for the clients then it is certainly possible have that included in the programs.

Four weeks is the minimum time you need to volunteer for. As it costs thousands of dollars to get on and off the Island as well as other expenses anything shorter would not be cost effective.

The first step is to fill out the application form. Then you will be invited for an interview followed by training. These are usually done on Sundays in Fairfield in Sydney. Anyone outside of Sydney will be interviewed via Skype or phone or by another interstate representative. In addition to that you will need to be involved in the programming and resource collection before you leave. (example, shopping for arts and craft supplies)

Why should people do this?

Recently, there has been much political debate about Christmas Island and huge media interest in boat people and asylum seekers.

ALIV has no political stance on the issue - we care about the welfare of the kids and families staying on Christmas Island. We do this through developmental/educational activities, and have lots of fun doing it!

Volunteer on Christmas Island provides people with the opportunity to put aside the politics, and just do something good
