What’s involved?
You donate your unwanted stash of green bags to the Bagbusters BagShare.
They are tagged as a BagShare bag and given to local shops in the Newtown area, where they are available for anyone to borrow if they have forgotten to bring their bags.
People who have borrowed a bag either return it to The Watershed, or to the shop where they borrowed it (and donate any others they may have spare).
Why should people do this?
Plastic bags are harmful to the environment in two ways:
1) toxic chemicals and non-renewable resources (oil, coal, and gas) are used in the manufacturing process.
2) when discarded, plastic bags persist in the environment from 20-1000 years, during which they can harm marine animals, block storm drains, and cause visual pollution.
Not only that, but plastic bags are not “free” – they cost Australians $173 million annually. Shoppers pay for them in the form of higher prices for the products they buy.
Other stuff
It's a win-win:
You can offload your guilty stash of green bags that you never use.
And you can borrow a bag whenever you forget to bring your own.
And that means fewer plastic bags ending up in our oceans and rubbish tips.
