What’s involved?
We've won Callan Park back. It's in council hands, where it belongs.
Now we need to continue to bolster support for helping the mentally ill patients who were moved to Concord when developers threatened to take over Callan Park and Rozelle Psychiatric Hospital was closed.
We need to stay informed, make ourselves heard and help the Friends of Callan Park and other determined activists reclaim the land for the hospital, for the community and for the most vulnerable people in it.
This might involve attending council meetings, a strike, writing about what you think of the issue, visiting Callan Park if you're nearby to see what all the fuss is about, taking on the cause, letting someone else know how you feel....
Why should people do this?
This is a social conscience emergency.
Callan Park - a serene, majestic site in Rozelle, Sydney - has been a site of great contention for a long time now.
It used to house the Rozelle Psychiatric hospital, but in a twist of government responsibility, council real estate policy and corporate greed, Sydney Uni was going to wack a carpark and an international students' accomodation building there, leaving all the patients in grossly inferior facilities and taking the beloved land away from locals, artists, families and council.
We've won it back.... but now we have to continue to fight so that the mentally ill who were displaced are restored to excellent hospital facilities..
