Pretty simple really, whenever you have a spare
$4 buy the Big Issue from a street vendor.
The Big Issue is a self described "independent current affairs and entertainment magazine", if you find mainstream papers trite, you may find this one highly readable, as I and my Grandmother did.
Highlights for me were the regular "vendor profile" which details the experience of one individual and how they came to be selling
The Big Issue (and hence homeless or unemployed long-term). The cover story of the first issue I bought 'A Bit Rich: Why do so Few have so much?' was really current, as was 'Secret Slavery' (on human trafficking).
Vendors are fairly easy to spot sporting their fluro vests, with copies of
The Big Issue in hand. You will generally find them around city centres and areas where there are a reasonable number of pedestrians.
