What’s involved?
Ever heard the term “carbon footprint” and wondered exactly what people are talking about? The concept of a carbon or ecological footprint is a tool to figure out how much of the earth we are using to meet our needs. That means resources like energy, food, and also land for our houses and roads.
It’s not like everyone can just give up on suburban lifestyle and go live in the bush, not harming anything ever again. But it’s handy to know just what activities do damage the planet, and how we can all take a few easy steps to reducing the load. We’re already using more than the planet can keep providing us, so every little bit helps.
This fun interactive calculator put up by the World Wildlife Fund, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Global Footprint network gives you a great idea of the activities that impact your ecological footprint. It has a gimmicky little cartoon, and a sliding scale for questions, so you don’t have to have a degree in ecology to know what they’re on about.
