What’s involved?

Voiceworks magazine is seeking 2 new columnists (books and media), to start in issue #71, the ISSUES issue.

Deadline: 7th October 2007

About the Voiceworks Columns: Voiceworks publishes 7 regular columns - music, media, books, sex, comics, zines and films - of approximately 1600 words. This means you have more space than a standard review, but less space than a feature article - a challenging form that allows you to dig deep into an idea, but forcing you to restrain your expression to stay below the word count. It's a great opportunity to work regularly with the Voiceworks editor and hone your non-fiction skills.

Theme blurb for #71 - Issues: Imagine a dope-dealing mother leaving her neo-Nazi boyfriend to live on a hippy-run fruit plantation. She soon develops a major case of OCD and runs away back to the city. But most of us like to hang on to the dilemmas, ideas, questions, concerns, grudges and politics that fester in the darkest recesses of our self-obsessed little minds. Are you gonna take issue with that? Or take some fashionable medication to set you straight so you can enjoy each issue of Who Weekly as it comes out? Or send us your manifesto!

Application Process
Pitches must be received by 17 September. The Voiceworks editor will offer you feedback. Then a full, 1600-word column must be submitted by the deadline of 7 October, 2007.

This process will occur each quarter. Regularity of publication by a single columnist will depend on the standard of each column, and the columnist's ability to meet the deadlines.

Full Columns
We will also consider full, 1600-word columns received by 7 October, 2007.

Other Non-Fiction
If you don't want to write a column, but have another non-fiction idea, pitch it by 17 September, or send us the article by 7 October, 2007.

Rates of Pay
$100 per column or non-fiction article

Age Limit
Voiceworks receives funding to publish the work of under 25-year-olds.

Go to http://www.expressmedia.org.au/voiceworks.php for further submission guidelines. We also consider visual work – comics, photography, portraiture.

Send your pitches, columns or articles to Ryan Paine – Voiceworks Editor.
