Community policing is a growing movement in Aboriginal communities. In a community policing system, laws are set in place and enforced by Aboriginal community members, rather than by people outside of the community.
Another form of community policing is called circle sentencing. In this system, community members and a Magistrate discuss a criminal offence and the sentencing together.
Both forms of community policing have been proven more effective in Aboriginal communities, and help to combat growing Aboriginal crime rates. If you would like to support community policing, write or call your MP or local council and thell them what you think, or get involved with your local reconciliation council!
