When: 8/24/2009 - 3/19/2010
Where: Australia Wide
Costs: None

What’s involved?

The need for a new organization - The Australian Government is seeking to establish a new peak national mental health consumer organization.

This project provides the opportunity for mental health consumers, mental health consumer organizations and groups to reflect on achievements of the consumer movement and also on the difficulties and challenges it faces. Importantly, it enables discussion of how the mental health consumer movement might move forward nationally and shape its own future.

You can participate by

  • Attending a face to face consultation
  • Writing a letter or submission
  • Filling in an online survey
  • Creating a piece of art or poetry representing your views

More ideas on how to get involved can be found here

Why should people do this?

In Australia there is a commitment to mental health consumer participation by all levels of government in recognition of the important role mental health consumers play in designing policy, programs and services. But there are also challenges such as the diversity of experiences of those who have a mental illness.  This is your opportunity to make sure the new peak body represents your needs.

Other stuff

This action is specifically targeted at people who are mental health consumers.  That means people who have a mental health problem (such as depression, psychosis or an eating disorder) or who access a mental health service.

Hi,

I can see how huge the mental health issue is within Australia and I am not completely 'dissing' the Government and their choices but I am terrible frustrated with their band-aids to 'help' the situation. I spose I am being all too confusing already but my basic comment is....there are already a huge about of organisations that address clients needs and government organisation (like the one I am working within now) refer to them. However I do know that alot of the programs available for people get removed so frequently because the funding is not provided. Why does the government not reimburse or provide resources to these places instead of starting their own competing body. The majority of people in the NGO's or the like have been working there for years and in the industry for longer. Their experience is priceless. They want to help and when they do they do is so well. Where is their help when they need it. Just because a lot of their work isn't 'measurable' doesn't make is any less of worth- you can't measure people's emotions or progress. It frustrates me to think that so much of society is about money and who deserves what and why.

Sorry if I have rambled but I have become so frustrated as to the state fantastic organisations have become because of programs being taken, no longer supported or reduced because of the government.

Cheers
