Things to do

DON'T... shampoo your hair

“We’re tired of feeling like cogs in the machinery of consumption. There’s this feeling of liberation to be able to say no to an entire aisle of the supermarket.” – ABC Radio presenter Richard Glover

How does this work?

It will take about six weeks for your hair to adjust. I found that during my six weeks there was probably less than ten days that I  understood the true meaning of hat hair and refused to go without one.

  • No shampoo, just rinse your hair and give your head a vigorous massage in the shower.
  • Use warm or lukewarm water, not boiling hot.
  • Invest in a comb.
How often you rinse your hair will be a matter of trial and error, I seem to have gone back to a regular rhythm of rinsing every two to three days, that used to be how often I would shampoo.

Be prepared for change…

Your hair will not stink however it will no longer smell like shampoo.
You can make it smell like whatever you want with some essential oils, perfume etc
The texture of your hair will change – for me this has meant less frizz, my bad hair days have been reduced by about 90%

Not shampooing your hair isn’t only for hippies, London Times columnist Matthew Parris hasn’t shampooed his hair for over a decade, I haven’t shampooed mine since September 2007.

So I've been reading up and apparently for curly hair shampoo is no good and it's all about conditioner...
http://www.wikihow.com/Wash-Your-Hair-Without-Shampoo

I listed some alternatives to conditioner in my last comment.

My hair is semi-curly, it used to just boof up but I think... because I don't use shampoo the natural oils are making it heavier.

If you want to start, just stop using hair products, rinse only with water, your hair will probably get very very oily (mine did), but over a week or so it got less and less oily and then started to look normal again.

The main thing with hair in general, is that you have to do what works for you. If you can stand to go about four weeks without anything, your hair's natural oils will balance out and maybe at most you'll want to condition once a week.

P.S. I was lucky enough to do this in Madagascar - where there was little running water, let alone fashionable social engagements. If you can - take a holiday, if not - you've got guts! =)

Wow!

I'm with Jess, what about conditioner? I use conditioner more than anything else because I have curly hair. How does it work, what's the 411?

awesome piece.

This is rad! I went without shampooing my hair for over 6 months (I had dreadlocks). After the initial adjustment, it just sorta self-regulated, so it wasn't even gross really!

Perhaps I should give it another go :D

Amazing where a bit of googling will get you... alternatives to conditioner that I've found include... tea tree or jojoba oil, or coating your hair with a mashed avocado or 1/2 cup whole milk or mayonnnaise.
Personally if there was an avocado in front of me, my mouth would stop it from reaching my hair.
When you stop washing your hair, to start with it gets a lot oilier, then the natural oils balance out so your hair doesn't look oily. I comb my hair when it's wet and I've rarely noticed any knots since not shampooing.
I also found this site for an alternative home made shampoo

I'm sure there's many more out there..

Hey this is great! But I think without conditioner my head would turn into some pretty serious dredlocks...anyway around the conditioner!!????
