The Lowdown

When: 18/10/2008 - 19/10/2008
Where: International
Costs: Minimal

What’s involved?

Every day, 25,000 people around the world die because of hunger – 18,000 of these are children. In Africa, where many countries continue to struggle with poor infrastructure, political turmoil and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the situation is particularly dire.

In the hope of breaking this cycle of child poverty, the “Eat So They Can” campaign invites citizens from around the world to participate in what is essentially one enormous dinner party.

The inaugural Eat So They Can event, a combined initiative of the Global Volunteer Network (GVN) and the GVN Foundation, takes place in October every year in conjunction with the UN’s World Food Day. On this day, people from all over the globe hold dinner parties, large and small, and collect donations from their guests.

How YOU can help:

1. Sign up – GVN will send you all the resources and information you need to plan your event, including a DVD, starter pack, posters, placemats, table card settings, recipe ideas and a media kit.

2. Host a meal – You could choose to host a brunch, lunch, dinner, cocktail party or a BBQ – whatever you want! Just make sure you host it on right weekend in October. To find out specifics for the next Eat So They Can dinner, check out: www.eatsotheycan.org.

3. Donate – Ask your guests to donate money to help end hunger in Africa.

Why should people do this?

Together, we can help stop child poverty, one meal at a time.
