What’s involved?
Free Hugs was started by one Sydney man who felt lonely. So he made a cardboard sign offering free hugs and held it on a busy sidewalk. For about 15 minutes people stared at him like he was a crazy man, then one woman came up and tapped him on the shoulder. Her dog had died that morning, and it was the one year anniversary of her daughter's death, she told him. She really needed a hug. So, he hugged her. And she smiled.
From humble beginnings, Free Hugs has become an international phenomenon. Thousands of volunteer huggers all over the world get together with their friends, go somewhere busy, and offer free hugs. Its a way to promote kindness and community that doesn't cost a cent.
All you need is a Free Hugs sign or T shirt, and to ask passers by if they would like a hug. Don't chase people though, no one wants to be hugged by force!
To find out more about the Free Hugs movement, to join an existing Free Hugs group, or to find other ways to get involved, check out their website: www.freehugscampaign.org.
You could also host a Free Hugs day at your school or workplace.
Why should people do this?
Everybody needs a hug sometimes! It's a great way to help other people feel good, and to feel good about yourself at the same time.
Other stuff
Make sure you organise a group that includes an adult if you are under 16, and to check with your local council or mall management to make sure the public place you choose is okay with you setting up your hug-a-thon.
I want to do this!
