What’s involved?
GM foods are those which have been genetically modified in order to make them more desirable for humans to eat. Some examples might be putting growth genes into a pig to make it fatter, or putting an anti-frost gene from a fish into a strawberry to make it last longer in cold conditions.
GM food could solve a lot of food shortage issues, but it also has some negative impacts on the environment. Some people don't like the idea of us "playing god" with nature. Whatever your view, get informed and get involved in this ongoing debate!
* Educate yourself on what products are GM, how many times you come in contact with GM products a day. You may be surprised.
* Live green! Try to cut back on your GM food product intake.
* Spread awareness about GM foods and possible consequences. One thing missing right now is public information. Spread the word about GM foods, giving both sides of the story, and let them decide what to support.
* Write letters to your government or people in charge of banning certain GM products.
* Write letters to your local grocery store to have them stop using GM products for the store brand, and eventually stop carrying GM foods.
* A good source to make the letter writing process easier is the True Food Network by Greenpeace: http://www.greenpeace.org.au/truefood/get_active2.html.
Why should people do this?
