How do we make our democracy better?

Our democracy is a proud inheritance from previous generations. But what should modern Australians do to keep this Nation as good as it can be for us and future generations? What would you do?

What’s involved?

Rethink Australia has published a Discussion Paper called, "Rethinking the Rules Governing Australia: Adapting to a New Century." It is intended to be informative, balanced and a catalyst for public discussion. It includes three widely held and distinct viewpoints about how to shape our Nation’s future. We want you to download it, read it, discuss it with your friends, then tell us how our democracy should work to cope with the future, and what Australia's Constitution should contain or control.

Why should people do this?

The Australian public and young people in particular are rarely asked what they want out of our democracy and how it should work. Rethink Australia is giving you this chance. Without your input how can we ever hope to make laws, public policies and services "smarter"? We need your feedback to create a broader citizens’ knowledge base, not a narrow one pushed by interest groups and "experts". By being engaged and sending us your ideas, you are helping to reverse the growing disengagement and cynicism many people are feeling towards our democratic process.

Other stuff

How should our democracy work to cope with the future, and what should Australia's Constitution contain or control?

Be creative! Email, fax or post your own written pieces of work in
response to the question above. Make sure your name, address and contact details are included.

Think about Australia’s long-term future. How would your ideas stack up in 50 or 100 years time? Are there lessons from the past that might be relevant to the future? What emerging threats and opportunities will Australia have to deal with?

Think about how your ideas will benefit, be fair and apply to all
Australians equally. How will your suggestions embrace other people who may disagree with you?
