The Lowdown

When:
Where: International
Costs: $50 joining fee and some annual fees

What’s involved?

If you like to tinker with making creative knick-knacks, and you can rope in two other friends who make something funky from hemp bags to hair combs, you have enough to start your own branch of the Craft Mafia.

The Craft Mafia are a co-op of indie craftspeople who want to promote DIY crafts, and give their established trade name out to anyone who wants to join them.

They will link to you on their website and give you advertising. They have a blog for you to write about your craft experiences and provide tutorials and online workshops for you to expand your skills.

To read about how to join the Craft mafia, or to subscribe to their newsletter, follow this link: http://craftmafia.com/startyourown.html

A great way to promote your group in your hometown is to do a little Craft Mafia graffiti - sneak out at night and put up some of your art in a public space - like a knitted telegraph pole warmer covered in funky buttons!

Why should people do this?

Making your own jewelry, clothes and accessories out of recycled or second-hand products is a great way to have funky and unique stuff without paying designer prices. It's fun, and you can make some petty cash - for some people, indie craft hobbies turn into a career!
