The Lowdown

When: 9/03/2009 - 1/06/2009
Where: Australia Wide
Costs: None

What’s involved?

A group of 20 organisations and individuals, led by the Inspire Foundation, have established a collaboration to look at how information communication technology can be used to provide support to young people from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. The focus for the project is young people aged between 12 and 25 who

  • care for a family member or friend with a chronic illness, disability or drug or alcohol problem
  • have a learning difficulty
  • live with a disability
  • experience a chronic or serious illness

Between now and 30 June 2009 the collaboration will work together to explore the possibilities for using technology to meet the needs of young people with these life experiences. Our end goal is to develop ideas for future research so that we can then apply for funding to get these ideas off the ground. Ensuring that the collaboration hears directly from young people with these life experiences about what’s important to them is a priority. You can have your say by participating in an online discussion starting from 13th March 2009.

From 13th March 2009 to 30 June 2009 we will be hosting an online forum via ActNow (www.actnow.com.au) to find out from young people what their needs are, what role technology might play in meeting these needs and what ideas they have for new technology based research or projects that might help them lead happier lives.

Why should people do this?

Not a lot is known about how technology can be used to better support young people who are carers or who live with a learning difficulty, chronic illness or disability.  This consultation will help us find out more about how to provide the support needed for everyone to lead happier lives.

another thought. Now that I have found the discussion, i have lots to share on the topic. Maybe having more things on the web where people who have a chronic illness or disability can just chat and make friends, and be able to select people who live close to them (like in the same city), and maybe even selct people who have a similar condition to them.
Finding and keeping friends can be very challenging for many reasons if you have an illness or disabliltiy, I know it. I think an exclusive online chatroom for people with illness or disablilty only would be great. It would allow people to make friends in an easier way then meeting people face to face straight away, and allow people to meet up and hang out with new friends and maybe make a lifetime friend. It would also give the young people a chance to let out what may be frustrating them and what they are finding hard, to people who are like them and will understand. =)

Hm, it seems that not many people have been accessing or discussing for this project. Maybe one of the things to consider is that it may be a little hard to find the right forum on this sight, because there are so many. I only just found the one that is relevant for me, but i have been an ACTNOW member for a few weeks now and unable to find things on this website. Maybe webites need to be a little easier to browse and find things. especially for those who have a chronic illness or disablility and find it more difficult then most sometimes to do things that others take for granted. like finding something on a website with lots of different links and sections. especially because reading from a book or reading through stacks of information manually may also be hard for some. just a thought. =)
