What’s involved?
What’s the ride all about?
The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Australia has organised a “Ride through Cambodia” challenge to raise money for research into Multiple Sclerosis. The 12 day challenge covers over 400 kilometres of Cambodia, passing through villages and getting to know the locals. The ride is not a race! The scenery, whether it be the hills or the jungles or the local Khmer people, are to be enjoyed and understood. There are a number of fundraising options available. The ride goes from January 23 to February 1 2009, but training and fundraising should begin soon!
Who can become involved?
Keen cyclists are encouraged to take up this opportunity. Anybody who wants to raise money for this challenge, and the many other fundraising events by the MS Society can become involved.
There are a few ways to train for the challenge:
· first of all, get fit!
· make a training schedule
· you will need to build up endurance and leg strength through cardio training
· build up to training-30 minutes of training for 2 weeks will start you off and then you increase your time
· train on tougher roads-off road, on hills
Why should people do this?
Why become involved?
Becoming involved does not necessarily mean going on the ride, it can be as simple as reading up on MS, listening to people's stories and donating money. Multiple Sclerosis is the most common disease of the cntral nervous system for younf adults. The disease affects 16,000 Australians according to the MS Society of Australia. Women are more affected than men, and the age of diagnosis is typically people aged in their twenties and thirties. Symptoms include; muscle weakness, extreme fatigue, troubles with vision and speech, and sometimes even paralysis. A cure has not been found. The MS Society of Australia's funding for research puts the disease in the spotlight, and improves the quality of life for MS sufferers and their carers.
