What’s involved?

Y - It's All About You! is a unique leadership program for young people, primarily in year 10, who show potential to learn the skills of leadership.

Y  Leadership involves four day-long workshops held at a community venue. Each workshop is facilitated by a YWCA NSW facilitator and is dedicated to exploring concepts such as leadership, communication, our role in the community, and career opportunities. Workshops culminate in a community project organised and led by the participants which puts into practice knowledge and skills gained throughout the program.

Mentors work alongside small groups of students and are integral to the program's success. Mentors participate in workshops to develop leadership skills, engage in future learning opportunities, and discover their leadership potentail. No specific expertise is required.

Mentors assist young people to:

  • Identify and enhance their leadership skills
  • Increase their confidence and capacity to make active decisions to improve their lives
  • Be inspired to think about their ability to change not only their own lives, but also the lives of their families, schools and larger communities
  • Develop awareness of their ability and responsibility to contribute to society, and to recognise their leadership role in the wider community
  • Understand the diversity of occupations and career opportunities
  • Network with adults who are role models and mentors.

Why should people do this?

Just by spending time and interacting with a young person you are not only changing their life but enriching your own. By sharing your knowledge and experiences you will:

  • Make a difference in someone's life
  • Improve your own confidence and self esteem
  • Develop your management and personal leadership skills
  • Extend your networks and make new friends

You too can experience the rewards of mentoring. We are now looking for mentors to assist with life changing programs. Just one day is all it takes.

I am volunteering at the YWCA NSW as part of my TAFE Community Services course. The Y is full of inspiring people who devout their time to running innovative education and support programs.

When I found out I was going to mentor a group of high school students about leadership (Y Its all about you! Leadership Program) and financial education (Hip Pocket Program), I thought that I should be the one doing the programs, not mentoring in them! However the training sessions soon changed my mind as they gave me all the knowledge and confidence I needed.

During the Leadership workshops, I had no problem engaging the girls in activities because they were well designed, and the facilitator was always ready to give assistance. Students were interested in my life, advice and ideas more than I expected and I was interested in theirs just as much! It was satisfying to see girls develop confidence and leadership skills as the program progressed, especially those who were struggling with the concept that everyone has the potential to be a leader. It was inspiring to see students really involved in planning and implementing the community project. I could see that the girls felt proud of themselves for participating in the program. I finished the program thinking, "When can I start the next one?"
