What’s involved?
Hip Pocket! It’s the place where we feel the hit when we spend our money. This workshop helps students discover how to gain better control of what goes into and out of that pocket.
Hip Pocket is a one-day highly engaging financial education workshop, presented to students in years 10 and 11. It is designed to challenge student’s thinking about managing money and the many ways marketers target young people as consumers.
Hip Pocket provides students with skills and tools that enable them to make informed decisions about their spending choices. We invite professional people to volunteer a day of their time to mentor small groups of students attending Hip Pocket workshops. Each workshop is led by YWCA NSW facilitators and is run on the school premises. Mentors provide students with support and guidance through the varied activities as well as providing a valuable link with the “working world”. No financial expertise is required.
Mentors assist students to:
• increase knowledge and skills in money management
• enhance understanding of superannuation, using credit cards, budgeting and saving
• discover what influences individual choices & decisions
• consider the pressures consumers face from marketers
• identify ways to avoid promotional traps and scams.
Why should people do this?
Just by spending time and interacting with a young person you are not only changing their life but enriching your own. By sharing your knowledge and experiences you will:
• Make a difference in someone’s life
• Improve your confidence and self esteem
• Develop your management and personal leadership skills
• Extend your networks and make new friends
You too can experience the rewards of mentoring. We are now looking for mentors to assist with life changing programs. Just one day is all it takes.
