What is Online Gaming Addiction?

Online gaming addiction is a growing problem, (nearly 20% of all gamers can become addicted, according to professionals at The Smith and Jones Addiction Clinic). But there is no official diagnosis for it.

Addiction happens when gamers spend hours online, resulting in them neglecting important areas of their lives, including their health, education, work and/or family. Online gaming addiction can have a serious impact on health, work performance and relationships. For more information, check out the issue page on gaming addiction.

What can you do?

You can write to the Australian Government (Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts) if you feel that online gaming addiction is an issue which needs to be addressed more strongly. For more information visit: http://www.dcita.gov.au/department/

Lobbying gaming companies by sending letters highlighting your concerns and encouraging them to put warnings on games (about the risk of addiction) is another way to make your voice heard.

Visit the toolkit for more information on writing letters.

this is particulalrly an issue because people dont realise how addicted they can get so quickly, this can offen lead to further complications. Such as not enough exercise which may lead to chilhood obesity. not in all cases, but in some cases.
