What’s involved?
There are 3 main actions that are easy and will make a big difference.
Tell someone who cares! Donation will only occur if your family confirms your consent. This is why it is very important to discuss your consent or objection to organ donation with your with family and friends.
- Think about your attitudes to organ and tissue donation.
- Discuss your attitudes with your family.
- Tell your family of your decision.
Sign up with the Australian Organ Donor Register by:
- Visiting your local Medicare office, where you can pick up a Donor Register brochure and registration form.
- Calling 1800 777 203.
- Getting a registration form mailed to you. To get one, email your full name and postal address to aodr@hic.gov.au.
- Downloading a registration form or registering online at http://www.hic.gov.au/organ.
Create awareness about the lack of organ donors and the Organ Donor Register. You can:
- Run an information session/discussion group where you could discuss the importance of organ donation and pass on your knowledge of how to register.
- Write letters to the editor of your local papers/online forums.
- Put up posters. Hand out flyers.
- Make an artwork/performance.
- Call up talkback or community radio stations.
- Contact the Triple J Hack program about doing a story on organ donation in Australia. Visit http://www.triplej.net.au or call 1300 0555 36.
You may already have signed up to be an organ donor when you got your licence but this is only a register of your intent. This action is all about registering your consent if you are over 18 (if you’re confused then check out the fact sheet to find out more about this change).
Organisations/Groups
