What’s involved?
Humans have always been consumers - but in today's world (developed world), I would describe humans as amazingly massive consumers.
So here are some small things to do (just at home or work) that can help you improve spending habits and also reduce your ecological footprint.
1. Sharing's Caring
Rather than buying books, DVDs or tools - borrow them! Maybe from library or even set a 'sharing scheme' among workmates, friends or neighbours.
2. Buy Second Hand
"One man's junk and be another man's treasure" (I think that's how the quote goes). Anyway, garage sales are often swarming with many things that are just what you are looking for (but at a cheaper price!). You can find garage sales around your area in your local newspaper, classifieds and the internet.
If garage sales aren't good, try ebay!
Also, charity shops (vinnies and salvos have some pretty interesting stuff)
3. Buy Recycled Products
Toilet paper, plates, cups, printing paper etc. If no one buy recycled stuff then the companies will just stop making recycled products...
4. Shop Locally
Reducing your travel means less energy (fuel) down the drain. Buying locally produced products means the stuff you're buying uses less energy too!
5. Make your own stuff
T-shirts! Pencil cases! cards!
Making your own things is fun, gets the creative juices flowing and sometimes making presents for others adds a personal touch to the gift... ;-)
Why should people do this?
Save money and the environment!
I want to do this!
