What’s involved?
People are being encouraged to donate their old or unused sporting equipment to help fill three 'sporting libraries' on housing estates in Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond.
The sporting libraries are just one part of a new program encouraging young people to have fun and learn, being run by Fitzroy Police.
Senior Constable Chris McGeachan said in a Victoria Police media release on 27 March that the program was also designed to build stronger links between young people and police.
Funded by the Victorian Government's Neighbourhood Renewal program, local youth can now take advantage of the sporting libraries as well as discounted driving lessons, designed for disadvantaged people and new arrivals, especially from Africa.
Senior Constable McGeachan said he hoped businesses in the area would help out by donating some sports equipment to fill the libraries.
“If someone has a cricket bat and some tennis balls at home that they never use anymore then we would love to have them. Likewise if your child has grown out of their bike and you are planning to get rid of it, we would again love to use it in the library,” he said.
The sporting libraries would be accessible to all young people in the City of Yarra.
To donate, contact Senior Constable McGeachan at Fitzroy Police Station at 13 Condell Street or call (03) 9419 4311.
