Recent changes to the passport amendment legislation will stop many transgender, transsexual and intersex (TTI) Australians from obtaining a passport in the gender in which they live.
Essentially, TTI folk who have not had surgeries that enable them to legally change their gender will therefore be forced to travel with a 'document of identity' that 'outs' them by drawing attention to their transgender status. While this might not seem like a big deal in some places, it could land these individuals in serious danger in countries that do not readily accept gender diversity - to the point that they may face harassment, assault, or be imprisoned (depending on the laws of the country they are visiting).
You can show your support for the TTI community by signing the SAGE petition which urges the Australian Government and Minister for Foreign Affairs to review the policies of the passport office bringing them in line with humane principles for treating all Australian citizens with equal validity.
