What’s involved?
What can I do? How can I help?
Implementing water wise practises such as shorter showers, or using a bucket to wash your car is a great start, but to get further involved try these tips:
- Installing tap fittings and shower heads that are more environmentally friendly. AAA shower heads not only save water, but money as well!
- Putting mulch on your garden/lawn keeps grass nice and moist, so it requires a lot less watering.
- Update your toilet flush to a more economic water saving flushing mechanism.
Actions
In March 2006, concerned young people from all over the Murray-Darling (including Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales) met in Canberra for a four-day youth river congress, where they brainstormed solutions and actions that would help the Murray River's declining health. This meeting was really successful, and enabled young people to present and discuss their ideas and voice their concerns to federal parliamentarians.
The congress was an initiative of Oz GREEN, an independent, non-profit organisation that works helps inform people and educate them on how to realistically achieve an ecologically sustainable future.
So far, Oz GREEN has assessed 400 sites along the river, and has worked with over 1,500 young people. Right now they're working hard to develop action plans so that future generations will be able to appreciate the Murray River. Check out their link below.
