What’s involved?
If violence against women around the world or in Australia concerns you, angers you, and makes you want to act, here are some organisations that are currently working on the issue that you might want to get involved with:
*Amnesty International Stop Violence Against Women Campaign: http://web.amnesty.org/actforwomen/index-eng. They have a list of actions that you can become involved in and you can also sign up to get ongoing updates and ideas for action: http://web.amnesty.org/actforwomen/actnow-index-eng
Amnesty has a number of offices throughout Australia that you can think about volunteering with. Here's a link to their local activist resource centres: http://www.amnesty.org.au/in_your_area.
*The United Nations Development Fund for Women does incredible work for women throughout the world. Here's their Australian website in case you want to get involved: http://www.unifem.org.au/. Here's their violence against women homepage in case you want to find out more about their campaigns regarding violence against women:
http://www.unifem.org/gender_issues/violence_against_women/.
*If you're studying law you might also want to think about volunteering at your local community legal centre and requesting to work in the field of violence against women (or any other field that you're interested in). Here's a list of Australia's community legal centres so you can check out which are in your area: http://www.naclc.org.au/directory/centres.html.
*You can also think about applying for an internship at either UNIFEM or the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women, or for any local or international NGO that works in the field. Here's the link to the United Nations Internship Programme in case you're thinking of applying: http://www.un.org/Depts/OHRM/examin/internsh/intern.htm.
I want to do this!
