WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY COMMUNITY FORUM
Suicide Prevention Australia will be holding a Community Forum at the
Melbourne Town Hall on the 10th September 2007,
World Suicide Prevention Day.
What is going on?
The Forum will consist of 3 main sections; with the aim to get the community talking about the issue of suicide and to identify where to ask and find help, if needed.
Content and discussions of the Forum will include:
- Explaining extent of the problems of suicide through figures
- Effects it has on the community Encourage the community to talk more openly about suicide, to help promote prevention
- To identify signs in yourself and someone else that can lead to suicide
- To determine that suicidal feelings can occur across the whole lifespan
- Potential benefits and dangers of openly talking about suicide, both personally and in the media
- Social taboo that stops people from talking about suicide
- Discussing suicide in the media
- Tips for sharing the issue with your family or on a personal level
Speakers will include:
Victorian Mental Health Minister, Lisa Neville; Victorian Coroner, Graeme Johnstone and National TV and Radio personality, Julie McCrossin.

The Forum will be conducted in an interactive style where discussions will include the audience. People on the panel will also include people with lived experience of being affected by suicide, researchers, practitioners as well as a journalist.
Light refreshments will be provided.
