What’s involved?

Three things you should know about your job

  • What and when you're being paid/taxed: remember to collect your pay slips to find out.
  • What kind of job do you have: are you part time, casual or full-time? You should find out before you start but sometimes employers never make it clear what type of work you are employed as. If you don’t know ask your employer and check your pay slip.
  • The award wage for your job, which determines what how much you get paid an hour: How do you find out the correct pay rate? Check out Ring Wageline at 1300 363 264 or www.wagenet.gov.au.

The top 10 things to look out for at work

1. An employer demanding that your work for free, to see if you are right for the job.

2. Being paid below the minimum wage.

3. Having superannuation and WorkCover allowances deducted from your wages.

4. Not being provided with payslips or group certificates.

5. Being made to sign a contract or agreement before you have been able to read, consider, or seek advice about its content, or threatened to be sacked if you don’t sign the contract.

6. Being discriminated against on the grounds of race, sex, age, sexual preference, ability, marital status, family responsibilities, religion, political opinion, etc.

7. Being harassed or threatened if you ask for better pay or conditions.

8. Being sacked because you’ve been ill or injured.

9. Being sacked without proper notice.

10. Being sacked if you join a union or if you encourage your workplace to become unionised.

If your employer is doing something dodgy then it’s up to you to do something about it.

This was taken from RMIT Union http://www.rmit.edu.au/workrights, a great info source!

I also add if you have any concerns about your rights at work or feel that you are treated unfairly by your employer in terms of your entitlements or pay, visit: http://www.ows.gov.au which is the website of the independent employment regulator.
