An idea for any budding community supporter. You could join the State Emergency Service. I'm a member in my local community, and they operate in some format all through-out Australia. You can committ as much or as little time as you want, (the minimum being weekly training meetings, usually about 2 hours) and the tasks you can undertake vary greatly. You could operate communications, lead the team, drive fundrasing, be the on call chef, remove trees, you name it. You'll get training in First Aid, OH&S, USAR (Urban Search and Rescue, this is essentially the operations conducted at 9/11, the removal of debris and rescue of trapped persons), with the prospect of getting your Truck Driving License, learning how to operate machinery such as chainsaws, pumps and generators (for urbanised people such as me this is cool). You'll make a tonn of new friends, and you'll be helping your community during storms, floods, and natural disaster (such as earthquake). I could rave on about the SES till kingdom come, its a great community service and open to anyone who'll committ to it. For Victorians, you can find out how to join at the following address. http://www.ses.vic.gov.au/CA256AEA002F0EC7/HomePag...>&3=

If you've never heard of the SES, just think urban CFA without the fire fighting responsiblities (though you'll learn how to put them out). If you can't find an appropriate SES to join i'd vouch just as loudly for the CFA. http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/
