A Trashy Environment

Many people can be careless when it comes to the environment. What began as a photograph of a piece of glass on a beach expanded into a range of photos showing the trail of garbage people can leave behind.

Photography and the Environment are both passions of mine. These photos, taken around South Australia, are to show people how destructive rubbish strewn around can be.

Here are some figures for how long some of these objects need to biodegrade:

Tin Cans    -     50-100 Years
Plastic Bottles    -    Forever
Glass Bottles    -    1million Years
Plastic Bags    -    500-1000 Years

These figures can be seriously reduced by simply recycling these objects or using alternatives. The way they are left on the ground makes me wonder if people genuinely do not realise just how easy it is to recycle, or if they really are lazy/ignorant/careless enough to just not bother.

If we can get people aware of how disgusting it looks, maybe they might see beyond the superficiality of it and do something about it and help the earth in the long run?

Thanks for bringing up this issue- here are a couple of links that might be of interest.

I interviewed our local waste management officer and took some photos of all the stuff Bundaberg throws away: http://relocalize.net/sustainabundy/wastemgmt

And, here's the Story of Stuff, from extraction to production, distribution, consumption and right through to disposal. It'll be 20 of the most eye opening minutes you'll ever see: http://storyofstuff.com/

We're showing both the Story of Stuff and my interview at a SustainaBundy movie night, this Wednesday- hopefully we can make a few more people aware of their waste!

The easy way of uploading images on a gallery:

'Create new page'

'Title name'

Then click on 'content' (not 'files'), then you can upload each photo individually and write a caption for each one

Think that's the quickest way

=)
