Australia has the worst mammal extinction record in the world – 22 mammals have become extinct in the last 200 years. No other country or continent has such a tragic record of mammal extinctions.
Traditionally, the implementation of on-ground conservation programs in Australia has been left to the Government sector. However, with more than 1,500 animals and plants threatened with extinction, it is now clear that the challenge of saving Australia’s biodiversity is too great for Governments acting alone.
A new approach to conservation is needed. As a non-government organisation with an overwhelming focus on the implementation of practical, on-ground programs, AWC is helping to define a new model for conservation in Australia.
AWC is helping to protect Australia’s wildlife by:
- Buying land to establish sanctuaries for the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems.
- Implementing practical, on-ground conservation programs such as the eradication of feral animals and the reintroduction of endangered species.
- Conducting scientific research into key issues affecting biodiversity in Australia.
- Undertaking public education programs to promote awareness of the plight of Australia’s wildlife.
Visit an AWC sanctuary
AWC has visitor programs at four of our sanctuaries – Karakamia, Mornington, Paruna and Yookamurra.
At each of these sanctuaries, visitors can see first-hand the work AWC is doing and the wildlife we are helping to save.
Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary
Visitors can experience the magic of Karakamia Sanctuary in Western Australia by participating in a two hour guided walk at dusk. Setting off along a bush track just before sunset, you are likely to see a number of nocturnal animals including Woylies, Tammar Wallabies and Quenda (Southern Brown Bandicoots).
Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary
Nature lovers can indulge in various guided and self-guided tours at Mornington Sanctuary in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. From birdwatching to exploring habitats unique to the Kimberley, there is something for everyone.
Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary
At Paruna Sanctuary in Western Australia, there are a number of high quality walk trails to help you discover this beautiful property. The trails vary in length and difficulty from the 2.5 km Possum Loop to the 13 km Numbat Track.
Yookamurra Wildlife Sanctuary
Yookamurra Sanctuary in South Australia offers an education program for primary and secondary school groups who can take part in activities including nocturnal guided walks, bird studies and ecology walks.
