Why do we exist ?
CanTeen, the Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer, is the national support organisation for young people (aged 12-24) living with cancer; including cancer patients, their brothers and sisters and young people with parents or primary carers with cancer. CanTeen was created by young cancer patients and its policies are guided by young people living with cancer. . A diagnosis of cancer at any time is traumatic, but even more so for a young person - already facing issues of identity, independence, relationships and career. Cancer is not a death sentence, but it can mean the start of a long process of painful treatment and years of uncertainty.
What do we do ?
We offer young people the chance to partake in camps, recreation days as well as have their say in the management process. This can begin at a Divisional level by sitting on sub committees for programs, to Divisional committee as well as the opportunity to sit on the Board of Directors.
What opportunities do we have for young people ?
Other Stuff
CanTeen’s foundation was built upon the fundamental belief that young people – through meeting, talking and sharing their experiences – would be able to better cope with the uncertainties of living with cancer. CanTeen provides a peer-support model where young people who have ‘Been there done that’ can share their cancer experiences with others in similar situations. Members are able to participate in camps, recreation days, seminars, and workshops, partake in decision making, meet new friends, share their hopes and fears and most importantly, have fun together!
