Why do we exist ?
To defeat cancer. We believe that it is possible to get to the stage when a diagnosis of cancer no longer means a shorter life or a poorer quality of life. We also believe that it is possible to reduce cancer rates in the community by increasing healthy lifestyles and reducing exposure to things that cause cancer.
What do we do ?
- We provide community-based health programs and support services throughout NSW.
- We provide information and support to cancer patients and their families.
- We help change the social environment and people’s behaviours to reduce the risk of cancer and thereby improve the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities in NSW
- We work to improve public policy and programs that impact on cancer control, by informing and influencing governments, speaking out on issues and helping cancer consumers advocate in issues of importance
- We raise funds to support our work and cancer research
- We fund and conduct cancer research
What opportunities do we have for young people ?
- Take action against the promotion of smoking in popular culture such as movies, magazines, nightclubs, youth events and music festivals. Join our youth action group - Smoke Screening
- Become a community advocate by completing a two-day training course and joining a network of advocates in your local area, lobbying to improve the lives of cancer patients and to reduce the risk of cancer.
- Find out if your local Council is a Community Partner with The Cancer Council, and if not, encourage it to join up.
- Volunteer with The Cancer Council as a way of developing new skills, gaining experience and play your part in defeating cancer. We have short and long term projects and a wide range of roles across NSW.
- Hold your own fundraising event for The Cancer Council.
- Participate in one of our well-known fundraising events that take place every year – Daffodil Day, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea
- Form a team for Relay for Life, a community event that raises funds and honours the lives of those who have been touched by cancer
