Why do we exist ?

Darfur has been labelled widely and consistently as the site of the world’s worst humanitarian disaster since it was described as such by United Nations (UN) officials in 2004.

Various reports estimate that since the outbreak of violence in 2003 between two and four hundred thousand people have died as a result of fighting and conflict induced malnutrition and disease. Three million have been displaced and four million people remain entirely dependent on limited humanitarian assistance.

What do we do ?

The Darfur Australia Network (DAN) is a not-for-profit, independent, community organisation run by members of Australia’s emerging Darfur community and concerned volunteers from the broader Australian community. The group functions as a network between the Darfur community in Australia, skilled volunteers and established organisations in the community sector.

This makes DAN a highly legitimate, resourceful and innovative network. It has proven its capability to rapidly implement new ideas, form new organisational linkages and respond to the evolving political landscape. Since its establishment in May 2006 DAN has become the most visible organisation advocating about Australia’s response to the Darfur conflict and one of the few organisations proactively engaging the Darfur community in its activities and management.

What opportunities do we have for young people ?

If you are interested in the issue of Darfur, refugees and/or advocacy then volunteering with DAN might be the opportunity you have been waiting for.

We regularly have volunteer opportunities in the following areas:

Other Stuff

Vision DAN’s vision is for sustainable peace, justice and reconciliation in Darfur, and the protection of those affected by the conflict, regardless of circumstance, from human rights abuse.

Mission DAN is committed to working in partnership with various groups and individuals in Australia to advocate for the implementation of the “Responsibility to Protect” principle and a meaningful peace negotiation in the region. By raising awareness of the crisis in Darfur amongst the broader Australian community and media, DAN seeks to advocate to the Australian Government and other international actors for responsible and appropriate responses to the crisis in Darfur. DAN further aims to assist in the protection of Darfuri people from human rights abuse by helping to resettle refugees displaced by the conflict in Australia.
