Why do we exist ?

Established in 1994, the Foundation for Australia’s Most Endangered Species Inc. (FAME) is an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention of any further extinctions of Australian wildlife. We support projects that benefit species that are at greatest risk of extinction.

What do we do ?

FAME concentrates on Australia’s MOST endangered species and does everything it can to help them survive. Sometimes this will involve restoring, improving and protecting habitat. Sometimes returning companion species to an area will help. Sometimes we need to learn more about a species or habitat to understand how to help. And sometimes, if a species is on the brink of extinction, we will support the remaining population until it is stronger.

Projects are only supported if they will directly contribute toward the survival of one or more endangered Australian species. FAME considers that educating people -especially children - about the Australian environment and the plight of endangered species will contribute to the protection of those species. For this reason we will from time to time fund appropriate educational projects or activities.

The chances of survival of at least ten of Australia’s most endangered mammal species, at least three endangered bird species and countless hectares of remnant plant communities have been improved thanks to the efforts of FAME, its donors, volunteers and partner organisations.

In 2006 FAME has 1300 members and volunteers. Our volunteers have helped erect hundreds of kilometres of feral proof fencing, destroyed vast numbers of feral weeds and planted thousands of native plants.

What opportunities do we have for young people ?

Join up, and you can volunteer to help with any of our approved projects. Right now we have active volunteers in three states: Victoria, NSW and South Australia.

When you join FAME (annual membership is only $10) we’ll put you in touch with the volunteer co-ordinator at your closest FAME project.

Other Stuff

Australia has lost more species of mammal in the last 200 years than the whole rest of the world has lost in the last 500! Many remaining species are under threat, and the story is the same for our unique birds, reptiles, fish and plants.
