Why do we exist ?

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) is the peak non-government environment organisation for New South Wales. NCC was established in 1955 and serves as an umbrella organisation for over 120 conservation groups and scientific societies in NSW. In total we provide a voice for around 100,000 people who care about the water we drink, the air we breathe and the places we love

What do we do ?

NCC's goals are achieved by working with our member groups on a number of levels:

  • Developing positive solutions and policies on key environmental issues to head off problems before they arise
  • Lobbying, advocacy and advice to all levels of government to deal with fundamental causes of environmental issues in NSW
  • Working collaboratively with key stakeholders: the grassroots community, government, business, non-government organisations and industry
  • Environmental education and information through the media, NCC publications, workshops, conferences and web based communications.

The NCC operates on several different levels by:

  • developing policies on a wide range of issues
campaigning on major issues
  • serving as an advocate for the environment on government committees
  • responding to government initiatives, proposed legislation and environmental impact statements
  • disseminating information to the general public
  • helping to identify and articulate community concerns about environmental quality
  • supporting regional groups in their campaigns to promote their local environment
  • running an active Environment Centre in central Sydney, Australia.

What opportunities do we have for young people ?

NCC has a volunteer program and many young people work with us to get experience working in the environmental sector. Young people who are leaving school or university have worked with us on projects ranging from writing research papers, to organising protest marches, to lobbying government.
