Why do we exist ?

The NMRC was initially established in 1984 to provide settlement services for migrants and refugees living in the North-East region incorporating the municipalities of Yarra, Darebin, Whittlesea, Banyule, Nillumbik and Moreland. The NMRC offers services to over 67 different ethnic and language groups and employs staff fluent in over 17 relevant community languages.

The key purpose of the NMRC is to cater for the immediate and longer term needs of migrants and refugees so that these people can successfully integrate into their local Australian community and are able to reach their full potential.

What do we do ?

  • Settlement orientation and information for newly arrived migrants and refugees.
  • Employment assistance programs to migrants and refugees.
  • Aged and Disability Services for members of ethnic communities preferring to access ethno-specific and multicultural services.
  • Research special projects and consultancy on a range of cultural and community issues.

What opportunities do we have for young people ?

Northern Migrant & Refugee Youth Council

In talking to young people through the NMRC's informal and formal consultations, two of the strongest themes expressed to our Refugee Youth Settlement Worker were a) a desire from young migrant and refugee people to have their own dedicated voice and b) for there to be ethnic-youth friendly social activities. In essence, a vehicle for them to advocate for their needs directly and the staging of events that would meet their cultural and social needs.

The Northern Migrant & Refugee Youth Council met for the first time on Wed 17 May 2006. The Project Officer, Hala Abdelnour, is currently calling for suitable young people to submit an application to join the Council’s Executive Committee. Applications and more info can be downloaded from the NMRC website http://www.mrcne.org.au

The MRC also runs sporting activities for young people (basketball, soccer, footy, etc); there are also settlement services for young people and various youth camps.

Other Stuff

The NMRC developed its popular immigrant community profiles to prepare and support the general community in welcoming new settlers to Victoria . This is consistent with international best practice, which shows that this model has been successful in fostering positive attitudes towards the newly arrived migrants and refugees. The NMRC is keen to foster this environment in the northern region and across the state.
