Why do we exist ?

To save babies’ lives through research and health promotion and to support families and community members affected by SIDS or the sudden and unexpected death of a child.

What do we do ?

SIDS and Kids Victoria offers services to the families of children who die suddenly and unexpectedly from 20 weeks gestation to six years of age, regardless of cause. The children may have died from SIDS, stillbirth, drowning, motor vehicle accident, fire, sudden onset illness, homicide or in some other way.

In 2002 we changed our name to SIDS and Kids to reflect that we also provide much-needed counselling and support for all families and those in the community who have suffered the sudden death of an infant or young child.

Some of the key issues we are working on are:

  • 24 hour, 365 days a year crisis outreach and ongoing bereavement support for families and the community following the sudden and unexpected death of an infant or young child.
  • The SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping program provides families, infant carers and health professionals with information about how to reduce the risk of SIDS and create a safe sleeping environment for babies.
  • We fund research which is aimed at reducing mortality in infants (two years and under) who die suddenly and unexpectedly from stillbirth, neonatal or perinatal death, sudden infant death and SIDS.
  • We have a particular research focus in the area of unexplained stillbirth between 32 and 43 weeks gestation.

What opportunities do we have for young people ?

  • To become Office Champions for Red Nose Day
  • To man a Red Nose Day stand within Westfield shopping centres
  • To participate in our city Foot Squads on Red Nose Day

Red Nose Day!
We’re celebrating our 20th year anniversary of Red Nose Day! Since 1988, people, cars, and buildings around the nation have joined in the fun of Red Nose Day. The red nose always brings a smile to people's faces. By wearing a red nose you can be silly for a great cause!
