Why do we exist ?
SYN is Melbourne’s only independent and truly representative student and youth media organisation.
SYN is the owner of one of the largest radio licenses in Victoria and can be heard throughout Melbourne and Geelong on 90.7 FM. It is also responsible for producing 10 hours of weekly youth television for C31 and a bi-monthly youth magazine called Pecado.
SYN specialises in a diverse range of music programming and this includes hip-hop, Indie, punk and ska, metal, dance, rock and even Asian Pop. SYN’s programs talk frankly and openly about issues that matter to our audience and include everything from comedy, satire, talk-back, opinions, current affairs, news and interviews.
SYN represents a brave new world of broadcasting, where voices which would generally be excluded in the mainstream media are given a real voice and platform.
What do we do ?
The Student Youth Network (SYN) currently operates a full-time Melbourne-wide community radio station (90.7 SYN-FM), produces 10 hours a week of live television (broadcast on Channel 31 Melbourne & Geelong), publishes a quarterly magazine (Pecado) and maintains a full-time internet presence
http://www.syn.org.au). What opportunities do we have for young people ?
SYN truly believes in the philosophy of “creators and not consumers” of media. This means that all of our producers, presenters and volunteers are under the age of 26. We are powered by the super-charged energy of one of the largest youth volunteer bases in Australia. Almost half of the volunteer base of SYN is too young to vote and still attending secondary school!
