Why do we exist ?

The Youth Coalition is the peak youth affairs body in the Australian Capital Territory.

We are responsible for representing, promoting and protecting the rights, interests and wellbeing of people aged between 12 and 25 years and those who work with them.

We actively promote the well being and aspirations of young people in the ACT with particular respect to their social, political, cultural, spiritual, economic and educational development.

As the peak body for both young people and those who work with them, we work closely with both young people and youth services. We engage in strong partnerships with youth services and actively listen to and work with young people in all areas of the work we do.

What do we do ?

  • Advocate in the interests of young people by responding to government, including writing submissions and giving evidence at parliamentary inquires, writing submission to reviews of government agendas and meeting with ministers to discuss issues.
  • Putting youth issues on the agenda, including media representation, research, budget submissions, pro-actively writing to members of parliament and the public service and developing policy papers on specific issues.
  • Support and involve young people, including through members of the Youth Coalition's Board of Governance, planning and organising Youth Week in the ACT, giving advice and support to young people writing submissions or proposals, employing young people on the staff and consulting with young people in policy responses.
  • Support those working with young people, including providing, training, networking forums and resources such as handbooks/training calendars/bus tours of youth services.

What opportunities do we have for young people ?

The Youth Coalition involves young people in three ways - the Board, the Staff and in Consultations.

We currently have five members of the Board who are under 25 and these young people are involved in the strategic direction of the organisation.

The staff is another key area where young people are involved - we currently have four out of eight staff members aged under 25.

Finally, we involve young people in all the work that we do from giving advice on the organisation of events during youth week to consultations on our budget submissions and government submissions on policy issues to being peer researchers in research done by the organisation.

Other Stuff

The Youth Coalition is always interested in hear from young people in the ACT.
