Are you a young artist? Do you live in a regional, rural or remote community in Australia? Do you want to show your creativity to the rest of the country and let all those city folk know just how mind-bogglingly talented young people living ‘in the sticks’ really are?

=>YES. YES. YES. =>

Well, all you have to do is make the most of a variety of services available to regional, rural and remote artists.

Achieve your artistic dreams!

What is the issue?

Young artists and arts-industry workers living in regional, rural and remote Australia generally have less support and resources available to them than those living in metropolitan areas. While all artists need to work hard to promote their art, it is often very difficult for young people in these areas to get exposure for their work beyond their local community. However, today, thanks to the efforts of a variety of organisations, young artists from all over Australia can take action and get their work out there!

Knowing where to look for help is often the hardest part. But, whatever your artistic forte—film, video, new media, visual arts, sound, writing, performance—there are services and support available to you. Here follows some important information on what young artists living in regional, remote and rural communities can do to get their art exposed!

Who does it affect?

All artists and wannabe artists living in regional, remote and rural Australia!

Where is it happening?

There are support services all over Australia dedicated to helping artists and individuals interested in the arts who live outside of major cities.

  • Regional Arts Australia is an Australia-wide organisation supported by the Australian Government and the Australia Council for the Arts. It aims to help artists and those working in the arts that live in regional, rural or remote parts of the country by offering workshops, promotion, funding, grants, project management and overall assistance. Regional Arts Australia has key agencies in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. So, no matter where you live, there is a representing body available for you to contact.

  • The Australian Film Commission (AFC) is a nation-wide organisation and an Australian government agency that offers assistance to young artists regardless of where they live. The AFC focuses on assisting artists in developing film, television and new media/digital media works by providing information and grants.

  • NOISE is a Federal Government initiative that invites young artists from all over Australia to submit their artwork to the NOISE website (www.noise.net.au) for free, in order to gain media exposure.

Why is happening?

Regardless of where you live in Australia you should have the opportunity to get support for your art. This has been recognised by a number of organisations that are working to meet the needs of young creative people.

Being an artist in the regions can be extremely challenging but also very rewarding. You must be pro-active and be prepared to create your own opportunities. Connect with other regional artists, source funding from wherever you can, and don't be afraid to take the plunge!
