Hey everyone I’m Amy, one of the ActNow interns who helped build the site. I am studying social work at Sydney Uni and looking forward to working in the real world. You’ll find my focus themes for ActNow are in Health, Your Community, Environment and Education and Work as these are all areas that I am keen to get involved in. As a studying social worker it is the social injustice issues like homelessness that are my main concern.
I enjoy a range of things, unfortunately many of these things involve spending money. I really enjoy arty stuff, mainly music and movies. I am a little exclusive with my taste in music preferring Australian female singer songwriters who perform folky kinda music… I’m into politics, being one of those people that will put their two cents worth in any political conversation. I would be a crap politician though as I am too honest and a bad liar.
What makes me want to act?
Ok, I admit it, I was one of lazy people who slept in till 10am (sometimes 12 but don’t tell anybody) and knew I should being doing more but didn’t know what more was. Even though I was spending my time lying in bed till those ridiculous hours I still felt pissed off about heaps of things going on outside of my comfy doona. It’s that pissed off feeling I get that bubbles up to my brain where I think about an issue long enough to recognise that ‘yeap that’s just crap and something needs to be done’. It’s getting past the ‘just crap’ thought that is the challenge as it involves action and it is only since being a part of ActNow that I have stepped up.
Something I’m proud of
Well working on ActNow is something that I am really proud of. I have made a difference to the way I live my life and I am excited to help other young people make a difference to their own lives through the stuff I have written for the site.
What I have learnt through my internship?
All actions have a reaction right? Well I have learnt that all actions, no matter how big or small they may be, do have great reactions. One of the greatest reactions is the way you feel after helping others-people, plants, endangered African bugs… always makes you feel better about yourself.
My Vision for Australia
Vision
- My vision for Australia is one where young people are celebrated for their fantastic contributions to society.
One Step to get there
• By getting involved in anyway that I can and encouraging friends to take action as well. It’s too easy not to do and the outcomes are beneficial for everyone, for the young people taking action and those that we are helping.
Life Motto
I'm not a motto kinda person but here is classic line from one of my favourite songs.
“Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.”
John Lennon (1940 - 1980), "Beautiful Boy"
