Youth Debt 26-06-2008 12:47

The role of reflection in taking action:

Like anything you ever do in life, it seems like your mistakes and successes all take on a different hue in hindsight. Like Old Man River said (so wise, so wise) once you look back on your life, all of your mistakes reveal themselves as perfect, or something like that anyway. That really stuck with me and I think it can be so closely related to our actions and why reflecting on them is so important. So far I've been a bit stunted with my action...I got to a certain point and then life got in the way, but even though the incubator has almost drawn to a close it's made me realised how futile sitting back and complaining is when there are so many opportunities to change things. My action was involved with trying to raise awareness with young people, particularly students, about youth debt and what their rights are, especially pertaining to centrelink payments. Ideally, I think that every university campus should have a centrelink office, and that students should have far more advice available to them as to their rights. So far I've only gotten to the stage of writing a detailed letter and complaint to centrelink (haven't heard back yet!) and I've emailed the financial service centre at uni to ask for exactly what info they're currently giving out to students. Maybe in the future I'll volunteer there or something, try to get the ball rolling?

Anyway, I think sometimes the reflection is even more important than the action itself, at least in terms of keeping us focused and reminding us of why we started this in the first place
