The Bunya Mountains is situated within the South Burnett Shire (Ex-Nanango Shire).  It has major cultural and historical significance and is being destroyed by industries.

The Nanango Shire Council has allowed intensive farming (feedlots) to be placed upon the foothills.  This is amplifying the water issues and polluting the waterways with effluent.  This pollution then washes into the dams used for drinking water throughout the Burnett Shire and beyond.  The Bunya Mountains area is the start of the water catchment area.

The Nanango Shire also hosts Tarong, Tarong North coal fired power stations, Meandu Mine, Kunioon Mine Coal exploration, Diatomite Mine, Kaolin Mine and Bentonite Mine.  This is not a complete list of industries situated near the Bunya Mountains.

The toxic pollution (Fly Ash) and emissions from the power station chimneys is well within the range of the Bunya Mountains.

The Bunya Mountains area needs to be heritage listed to stop this devestation to the area.

The South Burnett Regional Council is considering another intensive farming development (cattle feedlot) application for the Maidenwell/Brooklands area.

This will be the 3rd feedlot development within just a few years to be situated in the foothills of the Bunya Mountains.

This latest application will also be situated along Barkers Creek which flows through the entire Shire and ends in Bjelke-Petersen dam.

The area cannot afford the heavy water usage from this development.

The local and tourist roads within the area cannot support and are not safe enough for the increase in heavy vehicle haulage.

The applicant for this development lives in Wamuran and just wants to use up our valuable resources for his own financial gain - no return for our local Shire!

The local residents have already had to lodge objections twice for this application and it would appear that we will be required to lodge objections for a third time due to the public notification not being correctly done by the applicant on previous occasions.

If you would like to voice your objection against this development - please click on the link below and add your voice to help us stop this development.  You can also forward the link to your contacts.

Further details regarding this development application can be viewed at the South Burnett Regional Council Kingaroy office or at http://chatter.bunyawatch.com/feedlot_objection_letter.htm

Yet another Feedlot 17-11-2008 11:10

The South Burnett Regional Council has received another application for development for a feedlot within the Bunya Mountains district.  This new 2500scu feedlot is proposed to be situated only few klms from the existing 10,000scu feedlot.

The residents within the district have had to endure ongoing odour problems, fly infestation all year round and a drastic increase in the number of heavy vehicles.

These heavy vehicles consisted of B-Doubles being illegally on hilly, winding single land bitumen roads causing a major danger to local and tourist traffic.

This new feedlot will have an average of another 12 trucks per week on these roads.  Will consume on average 80,000,000 litres of water (80 megalitres) per year being mainly extracted for bores along Barkers Creek.  This in an already drought stricken area.  Some existing bores on the 10,000scu feedlot have dried up resulting in water having to be brought in by truck - yet again more heavy vehicles traffic.

You can help by lodging an objection to this development with the CEO South Burnett Council.

There is a pre printed letter to send from  Bunya Watch  or just email your own objection to the SBRC.
We have and ACTION page going too.

Nooroomba - Environmental Damage 27-11-2007 01:55

It has happened as predicted.  The clouds have opened up and deposited up to 170mm of rain in the vicinity of Nooroomba Feedlot.

This of course has the effect of cleansing the entire area of all feedlot waste -including the effluent pond.

All this waste ended up in Clapperton Creek.   This flows into Barkers Creek which supplies he drinking water for towns between the Bunya Mountains and Bjelke Petersen Dam where if ends up.

Not only have platypus habitats been destroyed during the infrastructure modifications for this feedlot, now the entire Nanango Shire has to cope with the environmental damage being flushed down the creeks towards them.

Shame on Nanango Shire Council and the DPI for allowing such a development to be situated along the creeks and waterways of the Bunya Mountains Tourist Drive.

Increase in Pollution from Tarong Power Station !! 19-11-2007 12:33

With the release of CARMA figures on 50000 coal powered electricity  stations and Australia has the glory of being No. 1 in the world per capita for pollution - there will soon be an INCREASE in the pollution output from Tarong and Tarong North power stations.

With the new coal mine soon to be made operational "Kunioon Coal Mine' will produce inferior quality coal.  This in turn will increase the emissions and increase the amount of toxic fly ash residue from these power stations.

Why has the Government allowed Tarongs decision to use this coal supply  from Kunioon mine.  There were other choices available !  Kunioon mine means that residents are being forced off their land after generations of families, not paid fair compensation for land taken and creating another unneeded coal industry when others are already operational and have superior coal.  These superior coal mines are not that far away from  Tarong and were on the decision table before Kunioon was decided upon.

Nanango Shire needs attention and help to save what remains of its wilderness.  Almost the entire shire is under Coal Exploration permits from different companies.

Incorrect reporting of figures for the NPI 25-09-2007 08:22

It has come to the attention of Bunyawatch that the Nooroomba Feedlot has not been reporting the ammonia emissions total for the correct postcode of 4615.  NPI - (national pollution inventory)  is a govt. dept that monitors pollution levels and emissions from larger industries.  These figures should be 100% accurate for statistical purposes and research institutes.  Why did it take Bunyawatchers to find these incorrect figures for 4615 - how many more industry figures are incorrect?  Do these figures influence what industries are placed in what area? Full details including emails from the NPI available at   http://www.bunyawatch.com/Air%20Quality.htm

Nooroomba Feedlot 17-06-2007 09:42

This feedlot is some of the pictures in our Gallery.  If you are lucky enough to be in the vicinity of the Bunya Mountains, Nanango Shire, Queensland,  you may have the misfortune of driving past this feedlot.

Just remember that the pictures show one section of pens with cattle - one section of empty pens and there are two more sections to be added .

The already existing odour problem, fly influx, illegal B-Double truck use and the ever growing and  impending watercourse contamination were not even at 1/4 strength when the photos were taken.

It is situated along side the Great Bunya Drive Tourist Route and if you have your windows down on any average day, the odour is putrid.

We would like to have the Bunya Mountains (QLD) heritage listed 15-06-2007 10:51

We would like to have the Bunya Mountains area Heritage Listed.

It has been attempted previously and due to the influence of some of the Local Councillors, was halted.

The same Councillors are now exploiting the area allowing industries causing major pollution to be placed within the Shire
