Name: Alex Czura
I live: Adelaide, SA.

Hey, I’m Alex.

I am a driven individual with a passion for the Environment. I'm currently workinfgat SA Water in the Environmental Management sector as a Climate Change Officer. Just last year I graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Environmental Science.

I joined ActNow because I wanted to make a difference, and I wanted to meet as many people as I could passionate about the same things I am.

I enjoy reading books and watching movies regarding environmental issues as it is not only my career choice but my passion. I have strong opinions in favour of the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” as I encourage everyone I interact with to see it. My customer service experience achieved over the previous years has given me strong communication skills that allow me to discuss Environmental issues liberally.

I'm interested in....Global climate change, water quality, the Earth, Weather, Kyoto Protocol, Global poverty, Drought, El Nino, Recycling , refugees, Religion, economy, animals, the environment, making a difference.

What is Act Now to me?

A program aimed at the 16-25 age group, formed by the Inspire Foundation aiming to make the Youth aware that they can make a difference and how they can go about doing so. Additionally its a place where a wide range of information on an endless variety of topics is available to share, read and contribute opinions to.

My Action with Act Now

Act Now has inspired me to put my goals into action and truly make an action. Through this I'm currently writing a lecture on climate change and a lecture on how people can be more energy efficient in their homes to not only save the environment, but also their wallets.

My Favourite Quotes/Sayings

“The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to it's close.... In it's place we are entering a period of consequences.” - Sir Winston Churchill

‘Carpe Diem’ (Latin for Seize the Day)

Work History

SA WATER - I work in the Environmental Management department of SA Water, implementing climate change strategies and aiming towards achieving a 60% reduction in greenhouse emissions by 2050 for the company.

I work for the City of Charles Sturt Council on the Community Coastal Reference Group. I’m the Youth Spokesperson for the council group commenting on issues that affect the Adelaide metropolitan Coastline and portray those issues to the state government.

Action completed so far 31-08-2007 12:25

Action already taken

In August I gave a 10min presentation at the west lakes united church in Adelaide. Where i detailed how human impacts are affecting out waterways and oceans and detailed that in the short future i will be presenting a detailed lecture on climate change and how everyone can do their part to make a difference.

Im currently completing a TAFE course as well as Uni in 'Renewable Energy Sysyems', where this week we are conducting a Home Energy Audit. Through this im calculating how much Greenhouse Gases are being ommitted per appliance in my house, per day, week, month, quarter, year and how this amount can be reduced to not only save money but also save the environment.

Through these studies i would love to complete home enery audits on other people's homes and help them not only save the environment but their wallets too.

Other action already completed includes.......

In April I attended the Earth Sciences Field Camp to Pt Lincoln, where I took part in groundwater hydrology, Soil Chemistry and Geophysics experiments that were taken on a wetland to test whether an old dump 200m from the coast was leaching its chemicals into the ocean through groundwater movements. An interesting part of this study was the installation of peizometers into the water table to test the groundwater direction and speed of flow. It was found that this dump is leaching its chemical waist through the groundwater to the beach itself !

I’m a volunteer for the Million Trees Program. I’ve been involved in numerous planting tree days, weeding and sand dune rehabilitation.

Through the past three years of my degree I have completed various tasks both individual and group such as in first year, I wrote a report on the Hydrological system of the Blackwood Forest Recreational Park and in second year on Adelaide’s developing Coastline. This year my task was to put together a report on the catchments of the Flinders University Lake and to find alternative water sources, rather than topping up the lake each summer with tap water. This involves working like an Environmental Consultant, carrying out Lake Flow mechanisms, Rainfall-runoff modelling, Soil hydrology and Stormwater runoff.

In addition, I am currently putting together a folder of water and energy efficient housing tips, alternative sources of energy and information about global climate change. I enjoy all aspects of learning about and actioning solutions of environmental needs.

Set in London, the video features a gang of young people breaking into local flats and switching appliances off standby, change light bulbs to energy efficient alternatives, placing bricks in toilets, as well as other energy saving schemes.

“There was a lot of anticipation around this video and I was really keen to do something a bit different,” Prydz explains.

"Pink Floyd would often use their video clips to portray a message across to the public eye. I’d been reading so much in the press about climate change and global warming recently and felt it would be great to try and empower people to do something about it. It’s not making a grand statement. It’s just simply saying everyone can do a little and it will make a difference." Prydz explains
