Name: Janna Hayes
I live: Rockhampton (at the moment)
Background...

I was born in Papua New Guinea but my family left in the mid 80s ( I was 5) because it was getting more and more dangerous. It wasn't until last year that I finally had the opportunity to return as a volunteer with Australian Volunteers International. Going back to a place I remembered as a kind of Narnia, peopled with witch doctors, crazy birds and very territorial pigs, was about the most frightening, enlightening and rewarding thing I have ever set out to do. If I'd been on Mars I couldn't have felt further away from home.

I love to travel and aside from PNG I've been to Europe, Morocco, Britain, America, Central America, the Caribbean and Indonesia. Despite all the travel I love Australia to bits and know the East Coast like the back of my hand - just can't say no to a road trip I guess! I'm currently studying International Politics and Law at UNSW and hope to work in international community development when I (finally) graduate.

Ultimately I became involved with ActNow because I'm a beleiver. Any first year philosophy major will tell you truth is a relative thing and I agree. The way I look at it you can choose to focus on the good in the world and surround yourself with positive action or you can whinge about what's wrong. When I'm 90 and in my rocking chair I'd like to think that I'll remember being a part of the solution, not the problem.
