I live: Macquarie University

Reading, writing, sports, and friends: they're on the list of things to do in between sleep and school. I've given rugby a go since I came down here from the states. I have the limp to prove it.

I tried break dancing once and I broke, so that was the end of that. Everyone within sight distance of my horrible gyrations and flailing limbs was incredibly relieved. The story of my life is that I still dance in public. I don't know how to stop, and I think everyone should have that problem.

I have a passion for studying people on both vast scales and in incredible detail. I'm interested in how one's background plays a role in their life and relationships. How much of your personality is wired by chemical collisions in your DNA? How much was stuffed between your ears by your background, family, friends, and economic position? How much Choice (with a capital C) can you really afford? History is the story of chemical collisions in real time, and I intend to study it.

What happens when you put stuff on YouTube 01-06-2009 03:15

I recently put two videos up featuring street interviews about racism in Australia. The goal was to try to see what people really thought about it. Does it exist, how is it experienced, does it get in the way of life? The video went really well, most people alluded to subtle racism and prejudice but nothing flagrant or dangerous. Below is a sampling of some of the comments the video produced:

"We indians are gonna kick all aussie asses residing in India! Fucking pussy fucks!"
"I'm American! Don't intigrate your country....you're NOT going to like it!
They're trying to get rid of the White people and take away your power.
Don't let them "Finagle" your country away from you!
Remember "ROMPER STOMPER!""

The YouTube comments have been interesting to say the least. They point to a bravado that comes with anonymous speech but also to the fact that social constraints are holding back people's true beliefs. Check out the comments below the videos at the links below to see what kind of comments a video about racism will produce.

So, what do you think? Are people showing their internet muscles, or is there substance behind their words?
