Josie

I’m a citizen of the world. I’m passionate about the world, about international relations, politics and culture. I've just completed uni ...  Sydney Uni studying Economic and Social Science with a double major in Government and International Relations and a minor in Political Economy.

My family and my friends are my life. I love the world even though there’s so much wrong with it.  I love life most of the time even when things aren’t so rosy. I’m an idealist without illusions. I love meeting ppl from different backgrounds and cultures. My friends make me laugh. Remembering good memories makes me smile. Bad drivers frustrate me. The plethora of world problems overwhelms me. Life challenges me. Over thinking consumes me. Ignorance baffles me. Boundless hope inspires me. People fascinate me.

What I want to do with my life is to make a real difference in the world, to help people, to change things, to help create a better world. I’m not sure how exactly but I’m certainly going to try. I want to stop being apathetic and complicit. I try to stay positive by staying focused on the bigger picture, putting things in perspective and appreciating and enjoying all the little things in life.

My mottos which I try to live by:

  • Never see a need without doing something about it.
  • Failure just isn't an option.

Silence & censorship ... freedom of speech? - 12-08-2008 09:51 Last updated:

Excert from article by Peter Lalor, The Australian, 11 August  2008:

"But nothing has sucked the air from the lungs as much as Seven's decision to drop an advertisement by Get Up from either side of the opening ceremony.

The simple but compelling ad urges Prime Minister Kevin Rudd not to remain silent on the issue of the repression of the Tibetan people while in China.
In a democracy, where freedom of speech is a given, Seven's craven self-censoring efforts represent a gold-medal act of moral cowardice."

Power of Hope - 07-08-2008 07:54 Last updated:

Seeking and concentrating on the positive in a given situation and in life in general, isn't just about being positive for the sake of it ... for me, it's the belief in this hope, (the hope that things will work out and that everything happens for a reason), that is the only thing that keeps me going, hanging on, believing and not giving up or in to the temptation that is the darkness of defeatism.

This Leunig masterpiece is a constant reminder to me of this:

.. And when the 'bright side' is no where to be found - make it up, create  it.

Little acts, great potential for positive impact - 30-05-2008 07:13 Last updated:

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."

Dedicated to the respectful man who so willingly and without any hesitation what so ever stood on the packed train so that the lady with her two young children could sit close together during peak hour travelling. See there is good in the world and in people, we just have to search it out and replicate it.

Values & Dollar$: Rich nations cutting aid and increasing defence spending - 04-05-2008 02:59 Last updated:

Read an article recently in the smh about global contributions to aid to the developing world .. some shocking and dissapointing yet not suprising trends:

"Although the United States made the largest donation ($US21.75 billion), it contributed the lowest percentage of national income, coming bottom of the charts at 0.16 per cent. The US spends the equivalent of $US73 for each American each year on aid, but $US1763 a person on defence" (Blanchflower, 6/04/08, SMH, "Rich Nations cut aid").

Will be interesting to see if these trends change after the upcoming elections and new government.
