Name: Karina
I live: Melbourne and then Brisbane

I try to approach life with a positive attitude aware that I will be faced with challenges that I can eventually overcome in one way or another. I like to take risks and I try not to be afraid of the unknown.

I want to complete my degree in Journalism and IR to go on and have my voice heard. I am passionate about the improvement of reconciliation in this country and understand the importance of closing the gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians. As a young Indigenous woman I am optimistic that with commitment positive changes will continue to occur only on a greater scale!I was/am inspired by the efforts being made by commisioner Tom Calma in the closing the gap campaign. I have a green thumb and I believe Australia can make a greater contribution to the preservation and protection of the Environment in Australia and around the world.
I LOVE music that makes me feel something..

I love to travel. I call Brisbane home, Nth QLD is beautiful, I have a connection to Byron Bay and I am in love with Melbourne. My elders and the people I most look up to have taught me to take pride in my culture, to keep my feet firmly on the ground and to value my education! My goal in life is to live up to this...

WHEN PUTTING YOUR MIND TO SOMETHING PAYS OFF! 12-08-2010 10:16

I recently went for a job at abc radio in Sydney and GOT IT! I am so keen to get out there and be the journalist I have worked so hard to become! Life is wonderful. I can not wait to have the opportunity to talk about the things that I believe are important; from reconciliation to International issues I am determined to make a difference in the world! I can thank actnow for making me apart of thie team because this is the place abc found and contacted me!

Life is great and although I know there will always be challenges to overcome I am convinced that when you put your mind to something it will eventually pay itself off in one way or another :)

channel 9 continues on its scare mungering act! 12-05-2010 04:00

Channel yesterday released a story about 75 asylum seekers boarding at a '4 star motel', 'next door to a childcare centre' and accross the road' from a school. Channel 9 went about the stoy in a completely unethical way through how they presented the story! I dont expect much less however it still doesnt make me any less angry to see the way these mainstream channels inflame xenophobic ideas in the heads of so many people.

The bottom line is that these people are human beings not paedophiles or murderers. They are HUMAN BEINGS just like you and I but have fled their countries for a wide variety of reasons. Some live under suppressive governments, have suffered from persecution, some are fleeing war and destruction but these shows make NO attempt EVER to delve into any of this! I wish people could see past stupid idiotic shos like the TODAY show but the fact is that many dont and would rather not.

It is a lot easier to shut out minorities and stay seperated from the different then to look outsde the box and see that these people are just as human as you and I...

The Burka debate! (or hijab) 11-05-2010 04:51

The recent Burka debate is just another excuse for red neck Australians to jump on the bandwagon of hate towards people of Islam.

Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi's comments yesterday that the burka is "un-Australian" and should be banned was just an attempt to attract the attention of the wider racist Australian population and it has certainly had its fair share of support.

I am not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination however I do believe in the freedom of an individual to practice one's own religion. Many of the Australian public and officials (as it turns out) create such an emphasis on outcasting minorities simply to legitimate themselves  which I think is weak.

All of a sudden government officials are taking an Al Quida stance by focing women to do something they may not want to do.

WAKE UP AUSTRALIA!

Aboriginal history in our Schools.... 01-03-2010 10:47

What I remember most about Australian history was the year Mrs. Jackson had the entire class dress up as characters from the first fleet. We each played a character from the first fleet and celebrated as though it was something I should have been proud of. I don’t ever remember sitting in a classroom and hearing about the history of genocide or about the 1967 referendum or about the fact that my Indigenous ancestors had roamed the very land we stood on for hundreds of thousands of years. I remember Mrs. McMillan, who I thought i liked, tell me about how Pauline Hanson was just trying to make the country an equal place but I never remember hearing about the massive unequal gap between the life expectancy of Indigenous to non-Indigenous Australians.

I was misled by the education system. In retrospect I can see clearly how it failed to paint a true entire picture of Australian history.

Rudd's recent decision to include more Indigenous history throughout the curriculum could not have come sooner. Australia can only benefit from learning about the history of Indigenous Australia. There is no doubt that it has been a major player in the building of our nations foundations.

becoming motivated again.... 23-02-2010 10:44

I really didnt do so well at uni last semester and as a result I am making/have made some massive changes in my life!

I decided to move states, slow right down on drinking/patying and start yoga back up! It was really difficult last semester and it seemed as though I had just lost momentum and fell into an abyss of  binge drinking, parties and boys. Falling behind at uni became inevitable!

anyway over the break I made some big moves that I am hoping will have an effect on my marks at uni this semester. Drinking alcohol is one massive one! It is easy to lose sight of life when ur continuously wasted so I am giving that away and transferring my energy into things with more meaning. I am prioritising my career over my love life and my bf understands that And I am going to restart my excercise regime in an attempt to achieve thehealthy body healthy mind theory.

Uni for me is a scary place that requires a hell of a lot of dedication, commitment and organisational skills. So I hope that I can get back on track again! fingers crossed!

Child prostitution.... 22-02-2010 11:23

Child prostitution is a sad and apparent issue from one corner of the globe to the other and there is NOOOO doubt that it often buried beneath issues such as war, poverty and the economy. I watched 'Bachi Bazi' tonight, a documentary about dancing boys in Afganistan.. These boys where subject to profound sexual abuse, rape and murder by wealthy men who gloat about their fetish for young dancing boys.

what interested me most was the level of comfortablity of these men who talked openly AND on camera about how they enjoy attending 'dancing boy' parties with the hopes of being able to have sex with one at the end of the night. Where in my community it is something that would be hidden and kept away from the judgemental eyes of society here it was praised and considered a sign of wealth.

It was like societies concious had become numb to something that to me is an obvious unjustafiable violation of the rights of children.

So how do you address an issue like this one? It is difficult to say... In one instance I would be hesitent to walk into someone elses community and enforce my own  personal ideas and solutions upon the community. In another instance I am immediately drawn to wanting to help these young boys caught up in these situations. Whats the best way to respond to issues like these ones that effect communities right throughout the world? I am interested in learing about projects that have been succesfully implemented around the world that aims to combat child prostitution.

If anyone woud like to learn more about this issue go to http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2010/s2827003.htm

There is also a movie and a great book called the kite runner tha gives an insight into the stories of young boys forced into this unfortunate lifestyle.

"true blue Aussies" rally together against Krafts decision to display the halal sticker! 21-02-2010 07:50

Kraft recently made the massivly catastrophic (not really) decision to display the halal sticker on its product, vegemite. The response has been controversial to say the least with Aussies everywhere outraged at the move.

My friend-whom takes complaints on behalf of Kraft- was filling me in on some of the calls she had had in response to this decision made by Kraft and it has really renforced how ignorant Australians are. First: who cares about the sticker!! theres a vegetarian sticker on there as well people! and Two: when are people going to stop being the Pauleen Hanson xenophobes that they are so proud to be and start looking outside of the Australian newspaper for an education?

When will Australians acept that Muslims are just as human as everyone else.  Why is it okay for people to throw outright discriminating comments about Muslims out there i.e-terrorists and extreemists but as soon as Tony abbott makes a comment about housewives the country (mainly feminists) are up in arms.. Ok Tony Abbott is a wanker and his comments where definately uncalled for but dont Muslim people deserve to have their rights protected as much as a womans or an Indigenous persons or a christians. It just seems like Australias deep history of outcasting people continues with Muslims taking the main stage today.

Ignorance 04-02-2010 09:59

I went fishing at a lovely lake hidden inland of the gold Coast yesterday and found it really disturbing to see how rubbish was scattered right throughout the landscape. It made me sad to see bags and bags of rubish, old nets, smashed bottles and much more spread wight throughout the lake. I like to think that I have a green thumb and an environmental concious but it was really demotivating to see that alot of people really simply dont give a shit! In 20 yrs that place will be nothing more then a dirty tip.. Im not a big fan of law enforcements however I think in situations like this people who simply dont care and have no concept of the damage they are doing fines seem to be a good consequence for these simple minded people who I think would be shallow enough to be more effected by a fine then they would if they knew about the cost of the damage they where doing.

The man show! 01-02-2010 08:57

This would have to be the most disguisting show I have seen in a while. A show built around slobby, dirty men who drink beer and treat women like they are nothing less then simple pairs of tits. I was really outraged when I came accross this show.. If anyone has seen it they would know that it dresses women up it the most revealing outfits and they have tem sliding down slippery slids in the middle of the studio or jumping on trampolines before and after the add breaks. The women are referred to as the juggies and there are segments where beautiful women struggle to spell the word CAT. This is all while dirty immature men sit around drinking beer, clapping and making filthy comments. I think it is a shame that things like this still exist in a society where women have had to struggle to become equal to men.
