I've just recently (sept 06) attended a conference run by law students which was all about social justice and issues affecting our community (both domestic and international) and it was a really inspiring experience. It reminded me of why i began to study law in the first place - so that i could use that education and those skills to help those who cannot make it alone. At this conference, an ActNow representative spoke to us and i was really impressed to hear someone not only voicing the issues that are out there but providing a forum for actually DOING something about it. All matters of social injustice in our community are of concern to me but as a budding lawyer, i'm mostly motivated by the law and the fact that legal provisions simply don't always work. That being said, i think every issue at large deserves attention and action. Which, of course, is why i have joined ActNow. I guess the issues that really get to me are the issues that the government are so quick to ignore...which, admittedly, is just about every issue out there. In particular, i hate the way that Australia treats asylum seekers and refugees. For a supposedly 'multicultural' community, we sure do have an interesting way of showing our acceptance of cultural diversity. Especially when the first thing we do is lock someone up because they are trying to ESCAPE persecution. Instead, they arive here to find they're a victim of yet another type of persecution.
