SPW is inspired by the Rio summit of 1992 which emphasised the value and participation of young people as part of the development process. SPW mobilises young peer educators to work with local youth in rural developing communities harnessing a positive change through youth empowerment and partnership.

SPW in Australia focuses on recruiting and supporting international volunteers, fundraising and campaiging with return volunteers through our Action Network.

Stories and blogs - 06-06-2007 03:25 Last updated:

Have you ever thought about taking a gap year? As has been mentioned before, there are a growing number of organisations that offer an opportunity to go overseas but SPW focuses on youth and development. If you are up for a challenge, a change, some direction in life or you simply want to make a difference in someon'es life, SPW might be the volunteering organistion for you.
Following is a quote from an international volunteers after completing their volunteer placement:
“Gap years - both pre and post University - are big business these days, and there are countless organisations that offer the whole ‘chance of a lifetime’ package for those willing to sign on the dotted line. However, the main thing that distinguishes SPW from most of these is the huge emphasis that is placed on the concept of partnership, with Western volunteers and volunteers from the host country working together in mixed nationality groups. This is unusual, and while certainly from my point of view it made communication a lot easier, the main point is to give young people from developing countries the chance to play an active role in their country’s future.”

Action Network Meeting - 15-05-2007 05:27 Last updated:

This is a post that should have been put up last week! Tonight SPW is having an Action Network Meeting. It is esentially a gathering of past volunteers and other people interested in continuing to play an active role in a community. Social justice and other causes are discussed, as well as the experiences with volunteering.

These meetings are open to everyone. Tonight we are meeting at Monty's Bar on Smith Street from about 7 onwards. The next meeting will be in six weeks where more warning will be given for anyone who wants to attend.

Tonights focus is on what activities the Action Network can do to raise its profile, get more people involved and raise funds for SPW Australia and International.

info session - 01-05-2007 03:09 Last updated:

Next week, Tuesday 8th of May, SPW is holding an info session for people to find more about what we do . The info sessions are great because they provide the opportunithe opportunity to hear from past volunteers. Everyone's experience is different so it is interesting to get a glimpse into what life was like for them. Feedback from people who have come to the info sessions has been that the talk and question time by past volunteers is the most valuable part of the evening.

The info sessions are heldat 88 Kerr Street, just off Brunswick Street, in the Australian Volunteers International (AVI) Office. The sessions begin at 5:45pm sharp and end around 7pm.

Come by if you would like to learn more!

Upcoming Events - 17-04-2007 12:50 Last updated:

SPW are taking part in two events this weekend where we hope to be able to talk to lots of different people, maybe even some Act Now members, about what we do. We are going to be at The  Age VCE Careers Expo at Caufield Racecourse from Friday midday till Sunday afternoon. The Melbourne Social forum is also on this weekend and we will have a stand there too.

Come by and say hello!

have you volunteered before? tell us - 11-04-2007 11:20 Last updated:

Has anyone travelled or volunteered to any of the countries that SPW works in? We have placements in Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, South Africa, India and Nepal. It's still in an 'ideas' phase but SPW Australia is keen to begin a programme in rural Aboriginal communities as well.

Most of the volunteers who work with SPW take advantage of being in these wonderful countries by travelling around. In the programmes with a language requirement such as the Nepal or Tanzania programme, speaking the language with the locals can let you have an experience that is quite unique and potentially more fulfilling.

My name is Lisa and I work for SPW. I study marketing at RMIT and we have a work placement year so whilst I was looking for a job I came across SPW and decided they would be a great place to work for. Luckily they had some work available and I am able to combine my interests in marketing with working for a reputable organisation that seeks change not money!

I am still at uni and I want to finish the course but I think I would like to do one of the programmes myself when I am finished. A number of the others that work at SPW have been on the program and decided to work for SPW when they got back. Anna, a SPW employee has a PhD in Genetic Education and she went to Nepal after completing it and then returned to work in our Melbourne office.  Michelle, another SPWer also went to Nepal and returned to do Art Therapy whilst working at SPW. My point is that we come from diverse backgrounds and anybody can do the program!
